The “Original Recycler”
Originally used centuries ago to make soap, today
rendering is the most effective and bio-secure solution to the disposal of inedible
animal byproducts produced by our country’s food chain. For over 125 years, Darling
has collected and rendered these inedible byproducts and recycled them so that they
can be used by commercial manufacturers worldwide.
The rendering process takes place
when heat is applied to remove the water from collected animal byproducts - both
remnants and mortalities. What remains is pasteurized and separated into fats and
proteins which are key ingredients in a broad range of products.
Rendering has adapted
to the changes in technology and food habits and will continue to change in the
future. Renewable energy is the latest transformation, and research is also being
conducted on new applications such as bio-plastics.
More recently, yellow grease
and tallow are being used as raw stock for bio-fuel production. Because these materials
are recycled from waste products, bio-fuels produced in this way will not diminish
the food supply and are not part of the “food for fuel” debate.
