From innovation to industry: How SAF can power U.S. aviation and agriculture
11 dec. 2025
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is an American innovation with the power to transform aviation and agriculture while strengthening rural economies. Today, more than 500 million gallons of SAF production capacity exist in the U.S., creating durable markets for crops and rendered products and supporting high-quality jobs in feedstock-rich states. But for SAF to reach its full potential, federal policy must provide the right foundation for long-term investment.
What’s holding back growth?
SAF requires advanced technology and significant upfront investment. While recent legislation extended the Section 45Z tax credit for SAF, the lower base value introduced makes new projects harder to finance. Without restoring the original incentive level, the U.S. risks slowing progress just as global demand for SAF is accelerating.
Restoring and extending SAF incentives
To address this, the Securing America’s Fuels (SAF) Act has been introduced in the U.S. House by Representatives Mike Flood, Sharice Davids, Troy Carter and Tracey Mann. This bipartisan legislation proposes two key changes to the existing tax credit framework:
- Restore the SAF base credit to $1.75 per gallon under Section 45Z for qualified facilities.
- Extend the 45Z credit through 2033, providing long-term certainty for investors and producers.
These measures would encourage new SAF investment and help the U.S. maintain its global energy leadership.
Stronger markets, jobs and energy leadership
At Darling Ingredients, we’ve proven SAF can succeed. Our joint venture, Diamond Green Diesel, is the largest SAF producer in North America and thrives across diverse market conditions. But for SAF to grow from a company success story to an industry success story, higher incentives are essential.
Our vision goes beyond our success — we want to see U.S. agriculture, biorefiners, airlines and rural communities thrive. A vibrant SAF industry benefits everyone, and Darling Ingredients will succeed within that ecosystem.
Restoring the full credit will:
- Create new markets for U.S. farmers and biorefiners.
- Support rural communities with high-quality jobs.
- Ensure America leads in sustainable aviation fuel production.
- Building a future together
America has always led the way. And now it’s time to lead a new industry – sustainable aviation fuel. This is about jobs, innovation and securing our energy future. If we’re not at the table, others will write the rules. We’re ready to show what America can deliver – and smart policy will make it happen.
