Day in the life: On the road with purpose

Sep 18, 2026

When you think of commercial truck driving, you might picture endless weeks on the highway, sleepless nights at lonely truck stops and long stretches away from home. But at Darling Ingredients, we do things differently. Our drivers play a vital role in our local communities, keeping the agricultural supply chain moving while returning home to their families every single night.

To understand what makes this career so unique, we sat down with Mike "Rocky" Rockwood, a skip driver based out of our Nebraska and Iowa operations.

The morning routine: Safety first

For Mike, every shift begins with a focus on safety and preparation. "We come in first thing in the morning and perform a thorough pre-trip inspection," Mike explains. This process involves several steps, such as on-site walkthroughs.

As a skip driver, Mike’s schedule keeps things interesting. Unlike drivers with fixed daily routes, a skip driver covers various territories, depending on who is available. Once he receives his routing paperwork for the day, he hooks up the designated trailer and hits the road.

Driving with a vital mission

While their routes may change, our drivers’ mission remains the same: collecting animal by-products, bringing them back to our plants for processing and delivering finished products to our customers. It’s highly specialized work that requires skill and adaptability. Drivers, like Mike, face unpredictable Midwest weather while managing trailers carrying materials of varying weights and viscosities.

While many people don’t think about what happens to agricultural by-products, Mike is hyper-aware of the environmental and public health impact of his job.

"As I was told early on in the industry, if these materials aren't picked up, bad things can start to happen. I'm grateful to work for an essential business that keeps moving,” Mike says.

The materials Mike hauls are repurposed into valuable fats and proteins, ingredients used in animal feed, petfood, fertilizers and renewable fuel.

Family comes first

For Mike, who has a wife and three kids, the biggest benefit of driving for Darling Ingredients is the work-life balance. Long-haul trucking often forces drivers to choose between a paycheck and being present for family milestones. Our route structures ensure that drivers are back in their own beds every night.

"Darling Ingredients is truly a family-oriented company," says Mike. "When life happens, they are always willing to work with employees to make sure family comes first."

With excellent benefits, ample paid time off and the daily guarantee of returning home, driving for Darling Ingredients is more than just a trucking job — it is a career that supports both professional growth and family life.

If you're looking for a driving career that offers more than miles on the road, consider what a career with us can provide. Our drivers play a critical role in keeping our operations moving while enjoying the benefit of being home most nights. We're looking for professionals who take pride in safety, value reliability and want to be part of a company where their contributions make a difference every day.
